Asil Anteres revisited

From an old series of pictures of Smokey, aka Asil Anteres. He worked for us for many years, never putting a hoof wrong. He was trained by Lois using TTEAM training method. We also had the joy of owning his mother, Tammy, in the last years of her life.

Tammy had, when she first came, been placed with an old companion of hers--Tony. Tony was blind and had relied on Tammy as a guide horse, they would stand shoulder to shoulder as the food was served, and then she would walk, leaning against him to the hay, she would guide him to the water after. Tony finished his time with us, and I took him up the hill to be euthanized, in his old green halter. Bringing it back empty for his companion to see.

Not too much later I put her in with Smokey, who lived in the immediately adjacent paddock--he had seen the whole Tony and Tammy tragedy.Smokey (aged 22) was recovering from an acute laminitis and had needed his own space to stay safe, with Tammy and Tony to watch over the fence. Smokey, who had not been in with her since he was weaned, stood up and hurried over to her as soon was put her in--then tried to drink--and she bit him! oh dear. That settled they became wonderful companions. He was bigger than she, she was a little pony size appy, and he a half-arabian. He would lay down with his legs stretched out, and Tammy would lay curled up in the space he created. She would also rest her head on his chest as they lay together.


Tammy's time came too, and I took her up the hill to be laid to rest next to her friend Tony. In the same green halter, and once again showed Smokey the empty halter.

A few months later I decided that Smokey was well enough to go for his first walk after his illness. The green halter happened to be handy; so I picked it up---suddenly Smokey could run very very fast!

If you learned to ride in Boulder County in the '70's and 80's you may have been lucky enough to be taught by any of these characters.
