How death came into the world as told to me by dearest Martin, was
told to him by Credo Mutwa, and as told to him by the elders of the
Koi San. I do not own this story, make no claim to this version, and
ask that the reference to oral tradition be honored.
Our mother the moon looked upon the earth and saw that she was
filling up, there was no longer space for all the plants and animals.
So she sent her servant the tortoise out with the message that
creatures had a limited time to be, and that their days on Earth
would be numbered. The tortoise set out on his quiet and steady path
to the Earth.

Eli lay by the fire pretending to sleep. He was too exhausted to just close his eyes. He had, after
all, he thought, nearly died today, though he wasn't entirely sure.
"You fed him," snapped the stallion at the girl.
"I had to," she retorted.
"He will be faster now."
"Less hungry, less likely to chase us in desperation."
"You have no alliance with him?"
The great cat shifted inside her skin.
"None as of now," she thought.
"Who is he?"
"That's none of your business, horse."
The stallion snorted. He had no interest in arousing the ire of the cat.
